The English Premier League may have reached the end of the season, but there is one lingering big issue brewing ahead of the next campaign. That’s the 115 Financial Fair Play (FFP) charges that are stacked up against the reigning champions Manchester City.

While Manchester City remain the current odds favourite on football betting sites to claim next season’s Premier League, is there a completely different fate waiting for them – Premier League relegation?

Charges Issued

The FFP charges were issued in February 2023 after a bombshell report of leaked information that the German newspaper Der Spiegel published. They relate to historical breaches of the rules and the high count of charges is due to the long period that they relate to.

City’s multiple charges were for operations from 2009 through 2018, a period in which they won the league title three times. The main accusation against the club is that they did not report accurate financial information about remunerations made to a club manager and players, which, the charges allege, City were able to pay personnel more than what was put in the official books.

Other charges include them not fully cooperating with the Premier League over the issues and also breaking UEFA financial fair play rules.

What Punishments Could City Face?

There is no real precedent, but the range of punishments is wide from a points deduction, fines and damages, a transfer embargo, getting stripped of any titles won during the period, a suspension or even straight relegation.

If City were to get hit with a points deduction, relegation, or even a suspension, that would have a sizeable effect on the club’s betting odds from bookies listed at ClubSport or another trusted source.

Will punters be looking at Manchester City Championship odds if relegated, or Premier League Relegation odds if they are hit with a sizeable point deduction?

Get It Sorted

The rallying cry from the club has mostly been about getting the issue settled quickly. The club protest their innocence on all counts and insists that they have done nothing wrong.

When Will the Case Be Heard?

There have been reports that the trial will happen in late Autumn 2024 in front of an independent panel, to which the case has been assigned, but no date has been made public. The Premier League investigation itself has been going on for more than four years and it’s not even got to the trial stage.

Comparisons

Both Everton and Nottingham Forest received point deductions this season for breaching Premier League Profit & Sustainability rules. Those much simpler cases were dealt with rapidly.

There are vast differences between those and Man City’s, as not only did Everton and Nottingham Forest cooperate with the league and admitted guilt, but the PSR rules under which they were charged are different from the FFP rules Manchester City are alleged to have breached.
