As the nights draw in, it’s time to up the cosy factor in your home

As we wave goodbye to summer, many of us look forward to embracing the shorter, slower, and cosier days that come with autumn. Gone are the days of planning barbeques only for it to rain in true British summer style, or shivering in shorts and t-shirts – it’s now time for jumpers, hearty meals and nature’s annual colourful display.

And as the leaves change, so too should our homes. Switching up your interior design for a new season is a great way to embrace all that autumn has to offer – and we’re here to help. So, whether you’ve recently moved into one of the stunning new homes in Trimdon or have been living in the same home for a while, here are our top tips for autumn-ready décor.

Layered textures

Soft, comforting textures scream autumn, so introduce chunky knit throws, velvet cushions, or even a faux fur rug to your living space. Not only do these layers create warmth, but they also add the depth and cosiness we want this season. Materials like wool, cashmere, and linen are great additions, inviting you to relax.

Earthy tones

Nothing says autumn like a warm, nature-inspired colour palette. Shades like rich browns, deep oranges, and muted yellows mimic the beautiful colours found in autumn foliage, so consider repainting a feature wall or introducing warm shades through soft furnishings. Bold curtains or cushions can give your home a seasonal glow.

Natural elements

A timeless way to welcome autumn is to bring the outdoors in. Natural elements like pinecones, dried branches, and flowers can decorate your tables or mantelpieces to give a feel of this time of year, while wooden bowls filled with seasonal fruit or a vase of pampas grass can also add an organic, autumnal touch. You can even get creative by fashioning your own wreath of leaves, berries, and twigs found during an autumn walk.

Warm lighting

As the nights draw in, consider swapping bright, summer lighting for softer, ambient alternatives. Warm-toned bulbs, string lights, and candles create an inviting haven that’s perfect for snuggling up and unwinding. Lanterns, hurricane vases, and candelabras also make wonderful decorative pieces to tie in that autumnal theme.

Seasonal scents

Scents are just as important as aesthetics when it comes to embracing autumn. Scents like cinnamon, pumpkin spice, and cedarwood evoke feelings of comfort and warmth, so try introducing these scents through candles, essential oils, or reed diffusers. A subtle fragrance can enhance the ambiance of your home and make it feel like a true autumn retreat.

Dining table décor

It’s still early days, but autumn marks the beginning of the run-up to party season, and that means plenty of gatherings with friends and family. Incorporate harvest-inspired elements like ceramic pumpkins, rustic wooden serving boards, or a table runner in warm tones to spruce up your dining table décor. Don’t forget to update your dinnerware too, as stoneware plates and copper or brass cutlery add an elegant, autumnal feel to any meal.

Reading nooks

There’s nothing better than curling up with a good book when the evenings grow darker. Create the ideal reading nook by carving out a little corner of your home, with a comfy armchair, a soft throw, and a side table to hold your warm drink. A nearby bookshelf and a floor lamp with a soft, warm glow will complete the cosy atmosphere.

Autumnal artwork

It’s time to say goodbye to summer prints and hello to more autumnal pieces. From landscapes of changing leaves to abstract pieces in autumn tones, wall art can significantly impact the feel of your space. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different frames and arrangements to create a personalised autumn gallery wall.
