  • C-Reactive Protein (CRP) – Produced by the liver and released into the blood when there’s inflammation in the body. Raised CRP levels are one of the best indicators that something is causing your immune system to react – often pointing to issues in the gut first.
  • Full Blood Count (FBC) – Measures white blood cells, red blood cells and haemoglobin. Chronic illnesses like IBD and Coeliac cause anaemia and raised white cell counts that can be detected here.
  • Iron, Ferritin & B12 Levels – Key nutrients that pass through gut lining and into your bloodstream. When levels low, it often points directly to the compromised gut absorption.
  • Vitamin D – When levels are chronically low, this key vitamin is associated with poor gut function and inflammation. It’s also one of the most commonly overlooked additions to standard blood test panels.

Inflammation is a protective reaction.

Except… it doesn’t always feel like ‘something’ is wrong.

That’s the kicker.

Just because you don’t feel sick doesn’t mean there isn’t inflammation in the gut causing problems. An overactive immune response can linger for years, causing widespread inflammation without so much as a symptom that people feel needs medical attention.

Blood tests are one of the only ways to keep an eye on silent inflammation before it causes bigger problems.

Nutrients Blood Tests Can Detect

The gut is your nutrient gatekeeper.

If it’s damaged in any way – also known as leaky gut or increased intestinal permeability – it doesn’t matter how well you eat. You won’t be absorbing nutrients at optimal levels.

It might feel counterintuitive, but the goal isn’t to search for a diagnosis. Instead, use blood tests as your personal health baseline – and watch how your numbers change when you implement healthy habits for life.

Here’s how:

  1. Invest in a baseline. Don’t just test one thing when you send off your blood sample. A single marker can say little without any other context. Test CRP, FBC, Iron, B12, Vitamin D, thyroid function. Create a baseline to work from.
  2. Test more than once. One weird result doesn’t mean anything. Take several readings over time to work out what’s normal for you. Then, adjust your habits and retest.
  3. Connect the dots. Tired all the time plus low ferritin? Low energy and low B12? Use the results to decipher just what might be causing your symptoms – before speaking with a doctor.
  4. Retest after lifestyle changes. Trying a new diet, supplement regimen or want to reduce stress? Retest in three months to see if those numbers go back to normal.
