4 Essential Rules of Challenge Coin Etiquette

The challenge coin is something American military and service people are familiar with. In the military, it’s been a tradition for over a century, although its origins aren’t quite confirmed.

Today, challenge coins are still used, and they’re often given outside of their traditional ways. While you can certainly get creative, it’s best if you follow the etiquette to respect tradition.

Below are four challenge coin etiquette rules you need to follow.

1. Giving the Challenge Coin

Challenge coins should always be given in a respectful and formal manner. Because of this, you’ll want to follow the usual steps for giving these coins.

First, place the coin into your hand with the logo or design facing upward. Then, shake the recipient’s hand firmly, pressing the coin into their hand. During this time, explain the coin’s significance.

Once you release their hand, the recipient can then examine the commemorative token, thanks to the convenient orientation you’ve placed it in.

2. Carrying the Coin

If you’ve been given a challenge coin yourself, then you need to carry it correctly. More specifically, you should have it on your person at all times, such as in your wallet, pocket, or coin holder.

When you carry your challenge token, this shows your commitment and loyalty to the group or organization it represents. This is especially true if you have custom commemorative coins, as these have been specially made for you! It’ll be easy to show off too, which you’ll want to do to display pride.

3. The Challenge

Here’s another reason why you should have your challenge coin on you at all times: you may be challenged or coin-checked.

To start the challenge, a member of the group or organization will take out their coin and display it. They’ll then request that everyone else present their coins. If you aren’t able to display your token, then you’ll have to buy everyone drinks or do another predetermined action.

4. Displaying and Storing Your Challenge Coin

When you’re not out and about, a good idea would be to store and display your challenge coin. That way, you won’t lose it, nor will it get damaged.

You can put the token in a coin display case or mantelpiece. Another idea is to mount it on a wall. Whatever you choose, you should arrange your coins in a way that honors their significance.

You can also take good care of your challenge coins by storing them in protective cases or sleeves. These will prevent them from getting scratched or tarnished.

Give Someone Special a Challenge Coin

As you can see, the challenge coin is something that has history and tradition. This token carries some weight behind it, so don’t give yours to anyone.

Instead, save your challenge token for someone truly deserving of it. Only then can you both fully enjoy and appreciate what this coin symbolizes.
