Start with the Working and Week You Actually Want

Considering an English teaching career, but torn between working online and moving overseas? Comparing online English teaching vs teaching abroad starts with a practical question: what do you want an ordinary working week to look like?

Perhaps you want a few evening lessons alongside your current job. Maybe you would rather join a school, meet colleagues and settle into life somewhere new.

Online teaching companies, tutoring marketplaces and overseas employers offer different arrangements, with their own eligibility requirements. Neither route automatically guarantees flexibility, steady income or the freedom to travel whenever you choose.

Start with your priorities: income, routine, independence and the kind of experience you want beyond work.

Online Teaching: Flexibility Around Existing Commitments

Teaching online can let you explore the profession without relocating. Depending on your route, you might apply to a company, create a marketplace profile, or find independent students.

Imagine you work in customer service and want to test teaching before changing careers. You could offer two evenings of lessons focused on workplace conversations, leaving another session for preparation.

That schedule gives you something manageable to evaluate. Do you enjoy teaching? Are students returning? Does preparation fit around your other responsibilities?

Online work may suit you if you want a gradual transition, but build your plan around actual bookings, not an empty calendar you hope to fill.

Teaching Abroad: A New Routine in a New Place

Teaching English abroad involves choosing a job and a location together. Your qualifications, experience, and passport can affect which routes are available, so do your eligibility research early.

A suitable classroom role could provide a workplace, colleagues and a reason to build a local routine.

However, “teaching abroad” covers very different arrangements. A summer program is not the same commitment as a year-round position. EF, for example, advertises both seasonal and longer-term teaching opportunities, with requirements varying by vacancy.

Before accepting, request written details of teaching hours, additional duties, salary, deductions, accommodation and contract-ending conditions. Choose the position as carefully as the destination.

Compare Income After Costs and Unpaid Work

Avoid comparing an online lesson rate directly with an overseas monthly salary.

For online work, include preparation, administration, cancellations, and platform deductions. Preply, for example, takes 100% commission on each new student’s trial lesson and 18%–33% on subsequent lessons.

As an illustrative calculation, a $24 lesson requiring one hour of teaching plus 30 minutes of preparation produces $16 per working hour before fees, expenses or taxes.

For an overseas offer, compare the amount remaining after accommodation, transport and other essential spending. Check whether advertised benefits are included, conditional or deducted from pay.

Prepare a cautious budget for either route. Ask how you would manage a slower start, an unexpected expense or a change in working hours.

Choose TEFL Training That Keeps Your Options Open

A 120-hour TEFL course is a common entry-level benchmark, although individual employers may require additional qualifications or experience. Course admission does not automatically establish job eligibility.

Look for assessed work, useful tutor feedback and clear qualification information. Check whether teaching practice and career support are included.

The TEFL Institute

The TEFL Institute offers flexible online training, tutor support and career guidance. It’s 180-hour Level 5 TEFL Diploma is awarded by Highfield Qualifications and regulated by Ofqual. Hybrid options incorporate live virtual teaching practice.

The TEFL Institute of Ireland

A sister company, The TEFL Institute of Ireland offers the same Level 5 qualification route, alongside self-paced learning, tutor support, mentorship and employment guidance. Its Irish base may appeal to learners seeking a locally based contact.

Premier TEFL

Premier TEFL serves US and international learners with online certification and Level 5 options. Advertised support includes tutors, recruitment assistance, a jobs board and job-coaching seminars. Compare individual packages rather than assuming every course includes identical services.

Consider Your Life Outside Lessons

The better choice depends on more than where your laptop sits.

For online work, think about your workspace, available hours and willingness to manage bookings. If you plan to travel, check immigration conditions rather than assuming remote work is permitted wherever you visit. Career-planning tools can support research but do not replace official checks.

For overseas work, consider distance from family, preferred location and how comfortable you feel adapting to unfamiliar routines.

Use concrete scenarios. Would you enjoy teaching online after your existing working day? Would you prefer commuting to a school but spending your free time in a new country?

Be honest about what energises you, and what would become tiring after several months.

Test One Route Without Ruling Out the Other

You do not have to make a permanent choice immediately.

You might train while employed, test a small online timetable and later investigate overseas roles. Alternatively, a suitable seasonal position could help you explore classroom teaching before considering a longer contract.

Build evidence as you go: teaching feedback, a realistic budget and a clearer understanding of your preferred learners.

Which route would bring you closer to the working life you want, not just the travel photos you like?
