Are Video Games Continuing To Impress In 2025 And Beyond?

Video Games

It’s 2025. Games are in every corner of the world, covering every theme and journey imaginable. Want to ride a chocobo and win races? Storm to the underworld in a blaze of axes and fury to recover a cure for your sick child? Shrink down to the world of bugs and take on a religious cult? All that and more is now available to gamers, letting them explore open worlds, tackle impossible-seeming puzzles, challenge their reaction times, fight against other players, and test themselves in every way imaginable.

But how have video games continued to level up? How have even simple titles managed to hold their own in a world that’s getting increasingly competitive and intricate?

Graphical Prowess

Graphics are probably the most widespread change that has been made in the gaming universe. If you boot up any of the triple-A online games in today’s world, you’ll see breathtaking landscapes, incredible characters, and more. Just look at any of the Final Fantasy games or Red Dead Redemption 2 – which looks incredible even several years after its release. Of course, a lot of games have gone even further since then.

That’s purely because it’s now possible to create phenomenal graphics even on fairly basic equipment and mid-level gaming setups.

But it’s not just the high-end games that have had this kind of facelift. Even the simple ones now look like something out of a glossy magazine, a display of graphical prowess and achievement. One look online and you’ll see the most beautiful video poker games imaginable available at the press of a button, with sleek white cards, crisp graphics, soft animation glows, and more.

Video poker has always depended on a screen to work, but now, it’s not just about conveying information. It’s about making the player believe they are playing with real, textured cards, and adding little touches of luxury to bump up the immersion.

For example, if you open a video poker game like Bonus Deuces Wild on SlotsLV, you’ll see crisp, sharply designed cards, with the wild card displaying an intricate flourish to make it stand out at a glance, and draw the viewer’s eye to it as something particularly special.

There’s no doubt, even the simplest games have come a staggering distance in a very short space of time. You only have to look back at some of the early games to realize what leaps have been made. Doom, for example, was one of the early pioneers of online gaming, and now looks almost laughable when compared with today’s achievements.

Even indie games in 2025 often provide stunning graphics, and although the retro pixelated look has remained popular, there’s no question that new heights have been reached in this area.

Stunning Soundtracks

It’s not just the visuals, although they may be something we are particularly tuned to notice. What about the sounds? Pull up any of your favorite titles, and you’re likely to realize that they are works of art in terms of the soundtracks. Sound is an enormously important part of the emotional journey, and developers today certainly know this.

Again, we’re not just talking in the big titles, although some certainly do go all out on their audio. Silksong, an indie title that was so anticipated it crashed Steam on its launch, has taken fans’ breath away with its sounds, perfectly building the ambience for the many different zones – when you step into Sinners’ Road, you know it. When you head to Bone Bottom, you feel it.

Hear Shakra off-screen and instantly, you’re on the alert. Unsurprising, given that the title implies the importance of sound – and yes, it’s woven throughout the plot – but wow, it deserves recognition for what it has achieved in the audio elements.

Of course, sound has been important in video games since the word go; we can all recognize the Mario soundtrack or the “Whoa!” of Crash Bandicoot bumping into something he shouldn’t, but developers have taken it to the next level now.

And of course, audio equipment is always getting better too, meaning that it’s both more important to players and more feasible for the creators to break new ground. No wonder we get feelings like this one when we open a new title for the first time.

Challenge Level

Okay, so some of the early video games were ridiculously challenging. Anyone who ever played Commander Keen will remember that. But what today’s best video games have done is hone challenge into an art form. Avoid frustration, avoid repetition. Get players to use their brains, get them to work for their achievements – and follow it up with rewards that make it worth doing.

And the variety of rewards has increased too. In some games, just getting scraps of plots feels like a better reward than any new weapon or skill (we’re looking at you again, Silksong). In others, like God of War, you’ll enjoy armor upgrades, treasures from other worlds, new special moves, and more, encouraging you to take on challenge after challenge.

Perhaps this, more than anything, is what has leveled video games up and made them so universally popular. There are different difficulty levels for all kinds of players, but whatever you choose to play, you’ll find the games work extremely hard to challenge you in ways that are satisfying and moreish, rather than frustratingly impossible, the way older titles once were.
