If there is one thing that is likely to evoke some special memories it’s the big Sunday family dinner, and the good news is that it seems to be making something of a comeback. It’s a great opportunity for the immediate, or on occasion, the extended family to get together, talk about what’s going on in their lives, relax and enjoy each other’s company whilst enjoying a perfect roast dinner.

If the idea of a perfectly cooked piece of beef, crispy roast potatoes and light, fluffy Yorkshire puddings has you drooling and reaching for a pen and paper to plan the perfect Sunday dinner get together then read on. Here, we take a look at the perfect tableware you will need to make your dinner even more special.

The importance of good tableware

As the saying goes “First impressions count” and the same is true when it comes to presenting a meal to your guest. No matter how tempting the smell in the air, or how well known your reputation as a great cook is, if the dinner you serve doesn’t look great then you have a problem.

There is a reason why restaurants all over the world pay particular attention to the tableware that they use, and this is simply down to presentation. We eat with our eyes, which is to say if a plate of food placed in front of us looks appetising and well presented, then we will want to eat it.

Invest in a good dinner service. Whilst it may seem like a costly outlay in the first instance, if you look after it properly it will last you for many years and help you to host countless dinner parties, Sunday dinners and a whole range of other occasions.

Tableware – what do you need?

When you think of tableware, the obvious elements that you need are your general crockery. This means plates, both dinner and side plates, bowls and of course some form of glassware to go with that. There are plenty of different options out there to choose from, and the problem can be deciding which is the best one for you.

White

Almost every good manufacturer will have a great range of elegant, simple, white tableware and you really can’t go wrong with this. The joy of purchasing a white tableware set is that you can add additional items from other ranges, like serving dishes, and they will not look out of place. If you want to add a little more personality to your table, then using items like coloured or patterned charger plates will help to change the theme and look.

Patterned / bold colours

The other choice is to opt for something with a little more character like a vibrant patterned tableware style or something that comes in bold vibrant colours. If you do opt for this, remember that less is more, and you will need to opt for simple accessories for your table.

There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to tableware, so pick something that you love. After all, you want to have something you will enjoy using for many years to come.

Additional tableware

In addition to your plates and bowls it can be particularly nice for a Sunday dinner to serve the food “family style.” This means you will need serving dishes and tureens that you can place the vegetable on the table in and, of course, a gravy boat with a saucer. Depending on what other condiments you are serving with your meal, a selection of smaller dishes to hold sauces may be a good option as well.
