The Best Options for Eco-Friendly Batteries

AA batteries

Electricity is a primary power source in UK homes, with its usage rising across different applications every year. While many products these days are rechargeable or mains-powered, there are still many household appliances and gadgets that run on batteries. For the modern consumer, it can be concerning to use disposable power sources, especially if they don’t know how to shop for eco-friendly batteries.

In the realm of eco batteries, there are options for rechargeable versions of models that you know and love, as well as more sustainable material choices. This article will highlight the best choices for the environmentally-conscious consumer in 2026, making it easier than ever to get long-lasting, less wasteful performance from all sorts of household tech.

Rechargeable NiMH batteries

Rechargeable AA batteries and AAA batteries made of nickel-metal hydride (NiHM) are fairly common on the consumer market. They’re considered the go-to solution for most families and households looking for eco-battery solutions, largely because of their capacity to be recharged around 1,000-2,000 times.

They’re also popular for many of them including an attractive “LSD factor”, meaning Low Self-Discharge. This means, unlike standard alkaline batteries that lose power over time, whether used or not, charged LSD batteries hold their charge for years, further combatting waste.

Use NiMH rechargeable batteries for items like:

  • High-drain digital cameras
  • Video game controllers
  • Motorised toys

Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are less common than their NiMH counterparts. These rechargeable batteries are relatively new to the market and markedly distinct from the lithium batteries that are found in the average smartphone.

They differ from NiMH batteries in that they have a much higher energy density, meaning they can last a lot longer, resulting in a lower carbon footprint over their lifetime. They also maintain a steady 1.5V output, which is more effective than the 1.2V that NiMH batteries typically offer. This furthers their reliability for a wider variety of devices.

Some studies show that Li-ion batteries have up to 70% less impact than alkaline batteries when used for their full lifetime.

Li-ion batteries are suitable for devices like:

  • GPS units
  • Precision electronics
  • Smart home devices

Using rechargeable batteries means years of repeat usage with just one purchase, reducing waste and landfill frequency.

The eco-friendly single-use batteries

If you find yourself in a situation where you need to use a single-use battery, such as in a smoke detector, there are materials and designs you can look for that will make your choices more environmentally friendly. The primary choices that can make a disposable battery eco-friendly are zinc-carbon and recycled-content alkalines.

  • Zinc-carbon batteries are actually a little less powerful than alkalines, but they are less toxic when disposed of.
  • Some modern alkalines have up to 10% recycled materials in them. This is a small step, but it does something to support the circular economy.

They’re not the best options for the eco warrior, but they’re better than simply reaching for the closest consumer brand of battery.

Remember to dispose of batteries properly

It doesn’t matter which batteries you’re using. If you don’t dispose of them responsibly, you’ve not been eco-friendly in any capacity at all. Make sure to follow some simple battery disposal principles, such as:

  • Don’t just throw them into the bin, as they will leak heavy metals into the soil and groundwater.
  • Take used batteries to retail take-back bins, specifically designed to process batteries.
  • Never put rechargeable lithium-ion batteries in a recycling bin, as they are a significant fire hazard.

By following these shopping and disposal guidelines, you should be able to find and use batteries in a much more eco-friendly manner, perfect for supporting a conscious household.
