We almost do not notice chairs, if everything is fine with them. But an uncomfortable, not fitting into the design of the object immediately attracts attention. This is the reason why the huge assortment of new furniture in stores is constantly replenished with fresh ideas. And at the same time vintage style chairs are in high demand. Many beautiful specimens from talented craftsmen have become icons of style, comfort and durability. But this abundance has been available for the last century and a half.

How has mass production of chairs begun?

For a very long time, furniture making remained handmade and individual. Perhaps the famous Konsumstuhl No. 14 by Michael Thonet has become the most popular vintage chair in modern history precisely because the craftsman started mass production.

Michael Thonet designed his brainchild in 1859. It was an order from the Austrian Ministry of Culture and Education. The task was to create a simple, durable and elegant chair for using in schools and other public places.

If you see such vintage chairs for sale, have no doubt that they are great pieces of furniture:

  • Beneath the weightless design lies great strength.
  • A special technology made it possible to obtain bent parts from strong woods. This reduced the number of fasteners and increased the mechanical reliability of each piece.
  • The separation of the design into several standard parts allowed for mass production and the introduction of a division of labor.
  • Assembly is carried out very simply. Therefore, this vintage chair was transported to different countries and continents in disassembled form. It took up much less space in this way. The box, which has a volume of 1 meter cubic, contained 36 units.

Other designs were added to the Vienna chair collection. However, the Konsumstuhl Nr. 14 retained its leading position and is still considered number 1 in the chair kingdom. Many vintage mid-century chairs are this particular model. In 1930, their total sales exceeded 50 million copies.
