The Role of Online Tools in Streamlining Electronics Prototyping

There should be no doubt about the considerable importance of electronics prototyping. After all, this stage of the product development process serves as a crucial bridge between a conceptual idea and a product that the end user can see, feel, and benefit from.

Electronics Prototyping Is Imperative – And Constantly Evolving

If you are reading this as a designer, an engineer, or even a hobbyist, you will hopefully already have some understanding of how electronics prototyping helps with the exploration, refinement, or validation of the designs prior them entering mass production.

What you might not have been so aware of, is the profound transformation of the electronics prototyping process brought on by the emergence of all manner of cloud-based tools.

3 Ways in Which Electronics Prototyping Has Been Changed by Cloud-Based Tools

Here are a few examples of the ways in which the latest online tools have influenced, reshaped, and streamlined electronics prototyping as we know it today:

Online Tools Have Helped Centralise Electronics Prototyping Processes

With all manner of software packages and tools relevant to the electronics prototyping process being based “in the cloud”, they have helped bring such elements as design, simulation, and collaboration into a single, accessible environment.

This means that fast-paced iterative work on circuit designs can take place between engineers and other project participants, without immediate hardware setup being required.

This, in turn, helps lower development costs, while also allowing for any flaws in electronics designs to be identified and addressed more quickly, ahead of the physical build stage.

Online Tools Make Calculations and Conversions Quicker and Easier

The electronics prototyping process typically requires engineers and designers to undertake all manner of calculations and conversions.

For example, a given project may bring a need to determine the necessary resistance for the powering of one or multiple series-connected LEDs from a given voltage source. Alternatively, it may be essential to figure out the output voltage of a resistor divider circuit for a particular set of resistor values and source voltage.

As you might imagine, various conversion and calculation tools exist online to help speed up these processes, compared to undertaking calculations manually.

From the voltage divider calculators that can be found on the likes of AllAboutCircuits.com and the DigiKey website, right through to RS’s comprehensive resistor colour band calculator for design engineers, so many useful online tools are just a Google search away.

Online Tools Lend Themselves to Smooth, Rapid, And Seamless Collaboration

With cloud-based environments allowing electronics design projects to be largely centred in one place – accessible for any authorised person with an Internet connection – the leading online tools make it easier for disparately located team members to work together.

For distributed teams – in other words, groups of people who are collaborating on a single project or task despite being in different physical locations – online platforms can enable them to all benefit from the same sophisticated simulation and prototyping technology.

Platforms such as Altium 365, Notion, and GitHub are designed for smooth and efficient collaboration online. The leading such cloud-based tools also incorporate such functionality as project documentation and version control, to help streamline the sharing of designs and the tracking of design iterations.

There you have it – just a few of the ways in which online tools have helped streamline all manner of stages of the electronics prototyping process that would have been a lot more time-consuming and cumbersome just a few decades ago.
