What Happens During a Dental Check-Up
SHARE

Has it been a while since you had a check-up at the dentist? If you have had no problems with your teeth before, you may be guilty of skipping your check-ups. Perhaps you have suffered no pain or discomfort and no visible issues. So, you have delayed going to the dentist because of your busy lifestyle.

When you finally decide to return for a routine appointment, you may forget what it is like and feel nervous. This is natural since most people do not like going to the dentist. Learning about the process is one way to restore your confidence and feel more comfortable. This way, you can prepare yourself for each step. Here is what generally happens during a dental check-up.

Voice Any Concerns

You will be greeted by the dentist when it is your appointment time. When you first enter the room, you are given the opportunity to introduce yourself and talk about your oral health. If you have had any particular problems, this is your time to let your dentist know. You can advise them on whether you have had any pain, discomfort, or anything different you have noticed about your teeth, gums or mouth. Then, the dentist is going to know where to look when they are carrying out their examination.

Get Comfortable

The next step is going to be getting comfortable for the examination. Most dentists will allow you a minute to adjust and lie back in the chair. You can get in a comfortable position so that the dentist can examine your mouth. Do not feel rushed and as if you have to do this part quickly. You will not want to move much once the examination begins. So, getting comfortable now allows you to relax. If you are a nervous patient, know that practices like Smile Cliniq can support you. They have treatments that are available to help with your nerves, and they can take the time to talk and reassure you before the examination begins.

The Examination

Now, it is time for the examination. This is going to include reclining your chair so that the dentist is able to see into your mouth. Generally, they will use a bright light so that they are able to see better. The dentist will look at all of your teeth and gums using a small mirror. In particular, they want to know if you have any decaying teeth or problems that need to be corrected. In addition, they will be on the lookout for plaque so that this can be removed. You may hear them speaking to their assistant, who will make notes.

A Dental Clean

You can have a dental clean at the same time as your examination. This is the process of getting rid of plaque. Sometimes, the cleaning can mean that you have to rinse your mouth out afterwards. Do not be afraid to do this or ask if you are feeling uncomfortable. This might be necessary if you have not been to the dentist for a while and there is a lot of plaque to be removed. But, you can choose to have this as a separate appointment if you want to. You can let your dentist know, and they can advise you on this.

Advice on Treatment

Next, your dentist is going to discuss any treatment you might need. For example, if you have tooth decay, they will advise on the next best step. Often, treatment is given to you at another appointment. So, you will discuss your options and what you want to go ahead with. Then, you will be given an appointment to come back for the treatment. Of course, if nothing is wrong and your teeth look good, you will skip this step.

Book the Next Check-Up

Once you have completed your dental check-up, hopefully, you will remember how straightforward they are. So, make sure that you book your next one at the same time. This is going to ensure you do not forget, and you will get a reminder near the time. You can do this with the receptionist and choose a time and date that will suit your schedule. This might be in six months or up to one year. Depending on your oral health and teeth, your dentist will advise you on the best appointment time and everything will be put in the diary. All you have to do is attend when it is booked in. The process is that simple.

If you’re currently looking for a dental expert, remember that you can always search for terms like “dentist near me” or “dental implants boynton beach fl” on the internet to find one near you.
